Valid Prescription

Based on the “Pharmacy and Poisons Regulations”, a valid prescription must be issued by a registered doctor, registered dentist*, or registered veterinarian^. It should include the following information:

  • The date of issuance
  • The patient’s full name and address
  • Quantity prescribed,
  • strength or dosage form of drug)
  • The signature of the prescriber
  • The address of the prescriber

*Prescriptions issued by a registered dentist must include the following statement: “For dental treatment only 祇限牙科醫療用”.
^Prescriptions issued by a registered veterinarian must include the following statement: “For animal treatment only 祇限醫治禽畜用”.

For drug names, if a prescription specifies a particular brand-name, registered pharmacists must dispense the designated brand and cannot supply generic alternatives. For generic drugs, the prescription must explicitly authorize the following points:
  1. Prescription should only specify the chemical name of medications and avoid indicating any brand names or manufacturers. For example, when dispensing cholesterol medication, writing “Atorvastatin” (the chemical name of Lipitor) allows dispensing generic alternatives.
  2. A prescription stating “Generic drug is allowed” or “Generic okay”, or similar wording authorizes the dispensing of generic drugs.
